GRAND LARGE. Meet the giants of the Open Sea thanks to augmented reality.

In 2022, SAOLA Studio and the French National Sea Center Nausicaá present a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience: an immersive, contemplative and educational show unique in the world, off the coast of the oceans in the company of marine species rarely observed by the human eye.

This amazing experience in augmented reality now takes place in the largest aquarium in Europe ! The scientific experts of the National Sea Center Nausicaá worked hand in hand with our teams on the choice of the species displayed, the realism of the animals as well as the messages we wanted to convey for this new exhibition signed by Saola Studio.

A DIVE INTO THE OPEN SEA WITH AR

Comfortably installed on the last rows of the amphitheatre facing the Great Bay, the visitors can witness the ballet of the animals from the high seas. They may be scared or playful, prey or predators but always larger than life, thanks to the hard work from Saola Studio's entire team.

It’s now time to set sail for a fantastic journey off the Pacific coast in augmented reality, through the ecosystem of Malpelo Island. The cradle of extraordinarily diverse and abundant wildlife as well as a major source of inspiration for Nausicaá's great aquarium !

A WORLD PREMIERE IN AN AQUARIUM

The main challenge coming from our approach of augmented reality with GRAND LARGE (High Sea) aims to immerse spectators in the natural history of the oceans while making them forget about the technology assisting them.

This innovative and immersive experience seeks to enrich and complement the living elements of the aquarium, in order to create a new reality where virtual and natural may evolve in harmony within a unique ecosystem.

By pushing the possibilities of AR coupled with specific soundtracks that mimic the feeling of deep water immersion, the spectator experiences, though his AR glasses, a fabulous and captivating story usually accessible to a privileged fews only.

THE CHALLENGES OF THE AQUARIUM OF TOMORROW

Ever since its opening, Nausicaá’s mission is to educate and raise awareness on the major challenges the oceans face. In 30 years of activity, more than 18 million people have already been able to discover the beauties and riches of the world's seas and oceans.

SAOLA Studio, through its creation of experiences in augmented reality, supports this major scientific and cultural institution by embracing a educational, playful and militant approach as well. This is why we are particularly proud of this new project, which reinforce our expertise with innovative exhibition in major cultural locations.

Therefore, Grand Large intends to respond to one of the major problems aquariums face : the impossibility of keeping certain fragile species in captivity, particularly the majestic marine giants. AR technology makes it possible for the visitor to meet these colossus with clay feet, stressing the interest of innovation when it serves a strong and relevant purpose.
